Recent research studies reveal that white tea antioxidants may inhibit the growth of cancer cells and support cardiovascular health.
Recent research exploring the potential health attributes of tea is leading many scientists to agree that tea, may contribute positively to a healthy lifestyle. "Fruits, vegetables, and tea all contain important antioxidants. Research suggests these phyto-nutrients may contribute substantially to the promotion of health and the prevention of chronic disease. For example, studies reveal the antioxidants in tea may inhibit the growth of cancer cells and support cardiovascular health," stated Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., F.A.C.N, Chief of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.
The flavonoid's in white tea antioxidants, especially the catechins,( pronounce karekin) appear to be very effective and help neutralize free radicals that can lead to cancer. A study at the University of Kansas concluded that "The Catechin EGCG was more than 100 times as effective as vitamin C at neutralizing free radicals".
Several population studies show that people who drink white tea antioxidants have reduced risks of some types of cancer. Generally, people had to drink at least five cups a day to reap the benefit, but more research is needed in this area. Tea also appears to be particularly effective at reducing the damage caused by cigarette smokers. There is also evidence that green tea may inhibit tumor growth. According to the Tea Association of the USA, some preliminary studies find a correlation of tea consumption and the risk of certain types of cancer, including breast, lung and skin cancers and cancer of the mouth. White Tea Background . To date, “genuine” white tea is considered to be derived from the first flush buds of the tea bush and grown exclusively in the Fujian Province of China. The name of ‘white tea’ refers to the silver-colored (white) hairs on the picked tea bud. White tea is the least processed of all teas. It isn’t rolled first but is immediately fired. White tea has a strong health association for consumers, but has never been studied exclusively according to public knowledge. Availability is limited and cost high as a result of the limitations of both the plucking standard and its geographical availability. Based on current demands for white tea, a new geographic standard has been proposed according to the Tea Association of the USA. White Tea Antioxidants Benefits. It has been found that in past studies using bacteria, white teas were more effective than green tea in inhibiting mutagenicity, ("a result of an repaired/mis repaired DNA damage and an early step in the process leading to cancer"). White tea antioxidants contained many of the expected polyphenols, some even found in higher concentrations in white tea than in green tea brewed under the same conditions. Caffeine was also present in higher levels in white tea than in green tea.
